wisconsin rep. scott gunderson, keeping the state safe from homos and children without guns
hunting bill would allow 8-year-olds to use weapons
after co-sponsoring the still-pending state constitutional amendment to ban marriage for same-sex couples, and anything "substantially similar" to marriage for everyone in the state of wisconsin, rep gunderson is our knight in shining armor once again with a much needed bill that would allow 8 year olds to hunt by themselves.
*gag*
in the last year or so, i have had the opportunity to participate in a couple of events where constituents got the chance to say their piece about the marriage amendment to members of the state assembly. in both instances, gunderson *insisted* that the proposed amendment would not effect things like health insurance benefits for unmarried hetero couples or hetero domestic partnerships, even though the language of the bill clearly states that, "only a marriage between one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in this state. a legal status identical or substantially similar to that of marriage for unmarried individuals shall not be valid or recognized in this state."
take 2:
in the hunting article, gunderson says,"wisconsin is losing hunters and its hunting tradition because young people are losing interest." while the dnr says, "much of the decline occurred in 2002, when chronic wasting disease was discovered in the white-tailed deer herd, and numbers have climbed in 2003 and 2004."
do it again!
gunderson says, "the other big issue is parental rights. this allows them to make a decision whether a child can hunt at an earlier age." common sense, a guy whose 14 year old was accidentally shot and killed by a 12 year old while deer hunting, and the wisconsin chapter of the american academy of pediatrics says, "this is a childhood safety issue."
the guy whose kid was killed also points out that, even though he is all about hunting and guns, "eight-year-olds don't have the coordination or attention span or physical ability to handle a gun. they are learning cursive writing and some of them believe in santa claus." do you believe in santa claus, mr. gunderson?
one more time...
gunderson says, "the safest group of hunters is those 16 and under with an adult." the dnr says, "in 2004 there were 41 hunting injuries statewide from a firearm or bow and arrow... in 29 percent of all those incidents, the shooter was age 12 to 17, the highest percentage of any group."
also shocking:
currently, in the state of wisconsin, a 12 year old can hunt with her own weapon if she has passed a safety course and is accompanied by an adult. gunderson's bill apparently doesn't change this rule, therefore, if passed, "an 8-year-old would not have to take a hunter safety course, but they would have to when they turn 12."
you said it, not me:
and yet, somehow, "the dnr is officially neutral on the bill." but of course they are. says the dnr, "if we have fewer hunters, there is no question that would have an impact on how conservation efforts are funded. hunting and fishing licenses pay for conservation programs, but i don't think raising money is the reason to do this."
