revisited

thank you, earth, for the bautiful day. but how thankful am i? last april, i made a post about a website where you can measure your ecological footprint. it's a sort of calculator that takes the resources that you say you use and measures them in how many acres it takes to sustain that. last year when i took it, i measured 10.9 acres. this year i measure 9 acres. apparently there are only 4.5 acres of space available per person on the entire planet. this means that if everyone lived like me, and i feel like i'm pretty damn low impact, we would need 2 planets to sustain us. i'm a vegetarian, i drive my car such that i only have to fill the gas tank once a month, i eat organic food... damn.

in other news: who wants to see sleater-kinney with me?

new shoes

for those of you who know me, you know that i am not really into buying stuff and pretty much try to avoid shopping all together. you probably also know that, with the exception of one pair of sandals, one pair of work shoes, one pair of tennis shoes, and a random pair of tall boots, i have faithfully worn one pair of shoes for the last 5 years. what can i say? what would i rather have on my feet while out in this uncertain world than my trusty doc martens? when i first got them, i was in college and had never spent more than $50 on anything. i was a little bit hesitant of their over $100 price tag, but dug down into my consumerist roots and realized that i was not going to live much longer on the pair of nike cross trainers that i had gotten for indoor softball practice back in high school. so i splurged, and ended up with the most excellent and reliable pair of shoes i could have ever hoped for. but 5 years of hiking, moshing, driving, horseback riding, commuting, and general mucking about have taken their toll. first the soles started to split. then the threads came out of the seams. now there are holes in the backs of the boots where i can put two fingers through to pull them onto my feet. but they're still good boots, even if they are being held together only by the laces and some dirt.

so i started thinking about what kind of shoe i might like to try out next. last month i used my birthday money to buy a kick-ass pair of hiking boots for next year's new zealand conquest. but i still needed something i could run around in this summer. inspired by molly's small museum of converse all-stars, i decided to start there. i've never had a pair of my own, and everyone i know who has a pair loves them, so i decided to give chuck taylor a chance.

so molly and i met on state street, just outside of jack's shoes. it was a memorable experience on so many levels. approaching the wall of all-stars (seriously, the selection is almost overwhelming) we were greeted by a sales guy who was so friendly, that when i sent him to the mysterious shoe store back room, i asked molly if she knew him. she didn't. he was just *that* friendly. so we did the shoe selection process, which didn't take all that long because i'm not a good consumer. but in the mean time, the sales guy is telling us a very intricate (but not overly detailed) story about that morning's firing of one of his coworkers. apparently, it was the owner of the store's wife who dropped the axe, and the rest of the staff were so pleased that they were trying to decide whether or not it would be weird to send her flowers. i told him to go for it. i've never had to fire someone, but it must totally suck. and if the coworker was that much of a jackass, she deserves some recognition. but the fun was far from over. with the new chucks getting aquainted with my feet, and the coworker story behind us, the sales guy had one more trick up his sleeve. he wanted to shine my shoes. not the new ones, the old ones. turns out he's slightly OCD, and he wanted to shine my shoes. i don't remember whether or not i told him that it was the dirt that was actually holding them together, but i did tell him how much they'd been through. he seemed impressed, and in less time than it took me to type that sentence, he had retrieved the cleaning goo and a little sponge.

so now i have a new pair of chucks and a very shiny pair of very old doc martens.

the chucks even came with little all-star stencil stickers that i can use to spray paint them with. they'll be the new shoes that keep getting newer.

now playing: girlyman's first album, "remember who i am" which is about to be replaced by rasputina's "frustration plantation."

stay tuned for a new photo album designed exclusively for photos of our softball team, the L team. you will find said pictures when i post them under the "photo albums" list on the left side bar. it will be called "the L-bum." if you are a member of the L team, and i have spelled your name wrong, if you don't want me to post pictures of you, or if you have pictures that you would like to contribute, please let me know. some of the pictures will be pirated from abby's photos page.

we won! we won!

congratulations, L team! we won our first game tonight with a score of 8-3! this brings our official record to 1-2. damn, we're having fun! thanks to lenny and abby for helping me take pictures, i'll have a photo album up very soon. raise your pitcher, it's time to celebrate!

"i wanna be your joey ramone"

reasons why it's cool to live with molly, # 826: she has a subscription to bust that gets delivered to our apartment. score! actually, i don't normally partake of actually perusing the zines she gets, but i do read the covers, and this one had two magic little words on it: sleater-kinney. since it's hyphenated, does that make it one word? ask molly. either way, sleater-kinney is hot hot hot. andohmigawdijustfoundouttheyareplayinginminneapolison
june15andiHAVEtofigureouthowtogo!! sometimes i feel like i'm 15 again. but really, s-k is my all time favorite band ever and i've never seen them play live. never. and because i never got to see bitch and animal before they [were] broke[n] up [by susan powter], i will NOT pass up sleater-kinney.

by the way, and for the record: i hate you, susan powter, and keep your insane little hands off of carrie brownstein.

Sk_1
this picture of sleater-kinney was stolen from the internet a la a google image search.

umm... there was totally something else i was going to write, but i got seriously caught up in that rant just now. sometimes it's a good thing that i have the html ability to make links to things so that y'all know what i'm talking about, but sometimes it's bad because i could spend hours surfing the sites that i just sent you to.

in other news: you should "come out" (haha, i'm still going to giggle every time i say that) to watch the L team tomorrow. so far we're 0-2, but we don't care because we're having fun. and seriously, we have the *best* cheering section in our league. just goes to prove that you don't have to be good, you just have to be popular.

it's oh so quiet

one of my favorite things is opening up the windows in the morning and then crawling back into bed to let the sun and the breeze tease my skin while i snooze into late morning.

today abby left on a jet plane to new orleans for a geek... *ahem*... i mean... science conference until friday. just when things were starting to look like they were heading back to normal. sigh. then mike left on an amtrak train back to his homeland. it's probably a good thing we don't live closer together, because we party like freaking rock stars when we go out. we'll get together again when my liver recovers.

so now i'm home all by myself, and the birdies in the trees have all gone to sleep. mmmm. quiet.

listening to: liz phair (before she sold her soul)

ps
i might buy a motorcycle this week. i've been rolling it around in my groggy head all day. it's a really old honda that, as far as i know yet, runs well and would be a good starter bike that won't cost me a billion dollars. i've wanted something to practice on since last year, but i don't know what i'm going to do with it when i go to new zealand. hmm. hhhhmmmmmmm.

mission: accomplished

it hurts. i feel like someone sucked out all of my blood while i slept last night and replaced it with cement.

to everyone i saw last night: damn, it was good to see you!

to everyone i didn't see last night: it was a good time, and it sucks that you missed it, but you're glad you're not as hung over as we are.

listening to: the birds. a jillion of them.

break out

who: you
what: party
when: this saturday night
where: the shamrock for ladies' night, then club 5
why: lots of reasons. one of which being that my studalicious friend mike is coming in from out of town and we're both sooooooo ready to party.

the L team

spring = softball. it just does. last year i had a friend who played on a slowpitch league, of which i was profoundly jealous. i didn't want to be sitting in the bleachers, watching. i wanted to be out there on the field, playing. so this winter i found myself a team. the L team. since softball itself is unabashedly dykie, our coach was looking to put together an all lesbian team to infiltrate the madison city womens' slowpitch softball league. maybe since there are so many lesbians who are into softball, coach hopes, maybe we can form our own lesbian league next year. fun!

so here's the dealio: you should "come out" (snicker) and cheer us on! we've already played one game so far this year, which we lost by one single agonizing point. pretty good, though, for a team whose members have only met once or twice or not at all. our games are on tuesday nights, and they will all be played at the number 3 field at olbrich park. here's the lineup:

may 17, 7:30
may 24, 6:30
may 31, 6:30
june 7, 8:30
june 14, 6:30
june 21, 7:30
june 28, 7:30
july 5, 7:30
july 12, 8:30

bring your foldup camping chairs, bring your dogs, bring your kids, bring your partner, bring a whistle, bring a beer. this team is going to be a good time!

because i don't have words

from lewis carroll's alice's adventures in wonderland & through the looking-glass:

"would you tell me, please, which way i ought to go from here?"
"that depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the cat.
"i don't much care where - " said alice.
"then it doesn't matter which way you go," said the cat.
" - so long as i get somewhere," alice added as an explaination.
"oh, you're sure to do that," said the cat, "if you only walk long enough."
alice felt that this could not be denied, so she tried another question. "what sort of people live about here?"
"in that direction," said the cat, waving its right paw around, "lives a hatter: and in that direction," waving the other paw, "lives a march hare: visit either you like, they're both mad."
"but i don't want to go among mad people," alice remarked.
"oh, you can't help that:" said the cat, "we're all mad here. i'm mad. you're mad."
"how do you know i'm mad?" said alice.
"you must be," said the cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."
